Meatballs & Spaghetti!

Reader Marianne wrote me the other day, asking if I remember a cartoon from the 80s called Meatballs & Spaghetti. After searching the damp compost pile of fuckery I call a brain, I came up with nothing. I don’t remember it but I immediately pictured talking meatballs and spaghetti noodles who either solved crimes or were in a band or both. I was sort of close because Meatballs & Spaghetti was about a traveling band. The band did include a drum-playing cartoon dog, but still Meatballs & Spaghetti seems pretty basic for a cartoon during the golden era of foolery, which may be why it only lasted for a second.

Meatballs & Spaghetti was partly produced by Marvel Productions and aired on Saturday mornings on CBS for one season from 1983 to 1984. It was about a husband (named Meatballs) and wife (named Spaghetti) singing duo, who along with their drummer pooch Woofer and bassist friend Clyde, got into HIJINKS while traveling the land in their mobile home. Meatballs’ Jack Black-looking ass was based on… wait for it… wait for it… Meatloaf, and Meatballs & Spaghetti were inspired by Sonny & Cher. Meatballs was shaped like a meatball and Spaghetti was shaped like a spaghetti noodle, and she wore coochie cutters that were so damn short that she seemed always at risk of accidentally flashing her tortellini. Here’s the cartoon’s intro:

Clyde looking like a SHEIN knock-off of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo tells you how much effort was put into this. Since Meatballs & Spaghetti only lasted one season, it obviously wasn’t that big of a hit with children. The critics weren’t ordering a second plate of Meatballs & Spaghetti either. According to Wikipedia, Variety wrote this about it:

“No try at music here, or even much comedy either. It’s without any socially redeeming value.”

But well, since Marvel had a part in making this, they’ll probably turn it into a live-action Disney+ series, eventually. Yeah, that review is a shitty one but it’s still better than the reviews for Inhumans.
