The Teaser Trailer For Netflix’s “Wednesday” Is Here

Yesterday, we got the first look at Netflix’s Wednesday Addams series, creatively titled “Wednesday”. The show is executive produced and directed by Tim Burton and created by Smallville’s Miles Millar and Alfred Hogh. Today (a Wednesday), Netflix released the show’s first teaser trailer. It shows teenage Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) getting expelled from high school for releasing piranhas into a jock-filled pool, and her horny ol’ parents, Morticia and Gomez (Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán), sending her to a boarding school for outcasts run by Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). But, uh oh! The school is being plagued by murder and spookiness! The trailer’s tone is very “everything Tim Burton’s ever done ever,” except, thankfully, there’s no Johnny Depp.

Here’s the trailer:

The creators told Vanity Fair that they wanted the family to look like the original Addams Family cartoons by Charles Addams. In those, Gomez was shorter than Morticia (Luis Guzmán is 5′ 5″, CZJ is 5′ 7″) and way less suave than how the late, great sex god Raul Julia played him in the ’90s movies. Miles Millar says:

“That’s something that was very important to the show—that it didn’t feel like a remake or a reboot. It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing. It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim.”

Here’s what the old cartoons looked like:

The creators said they were surprised when Tim Burton agreed to produce and direct half the episodes because he famously passed on directing the 1991 movie:

“He was interested in where it was going, the mystery of the show,” Gough says. “He had a lot of questions about the previous television work we’d done, like how we were able to achieve it. He really loved that you had time to be with Wednesday and explore the character and you didn’t have to, you know, wrap things up in an hour and 45 minutes.”

“The ambition of the show was to make it an eight-hour Tim Burton movie,” Millar adds.

An eight-hour Tim Burton movie? And, again, zero Johnny Depp? I’ll believe it when I see it. Dude will probably show up in seventy layers of prosthetics to play Uncle Fester. And he’ll be credited under a stupid anagram like D.J. Phony Pen.
