The Golden Globes Will Probably Return To NBC Next Year

August 10, 2022 / Posted by:

There were no Golden Globes on NBC this year. Awards were given out in a scaled down ceremony at the Beverly Hilton, but they weren’t aired. Every celebrity in the world, save Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, declined the invitation to go. And those two only showed up in separate pre-taped segments, neither of which had anything to do with True Lies! You see, everyone hates the Hollywood Foreign Press. Major PR firms told their clients to ignore HFPA until they actually follow through on their promises to improve diversity, inclusivity, and not accept bribes and gifts (see: Emily in Paris getting two nominations after giving voters a glamorous trip to France). A few months ago, we learned that the awards show lost their PR firm. All signs pointed to the death of the Golden Globes: 1944-2022. Pia Zadora had already prepared a beautiful eulogy. But now Deadline is reporting that the Globes may actually be resurrected on NBC next year. Sorry, Pia! Back to your cave you go.

A source tells Deadline that a January 2023 broadcast of the Globes is “not a done deal,” but discussions are taking place:

While talks have been going on between the longtime Globes broadcaster and the Helen Hoehne-led HFPA, no final agreement has been reached as of today. Among the sticking points are timing of a potential 2023 Globes on NBC, with a number of dates being floated around things like NFL games and more. Perhaps more telling are concerns about a backlash to a Globes return and reforms the HFPA has enacted to get back in Hollywood’s good graces.

On Monday, HFPA sent out a two-page letter to various stakeholders, including distributors and publicists, stating that they’d “answered the call for change” by restructuring its organization to “address institutional and systemic concerns.” Ooo, big words! But Deadline points out that, um, this might be bullshit:

However, for all its claims of change — as well as meetings with representatives from Black, Latinx, Asian, AAPI, Native American, people with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ populations throughout the industry — the HFPA offered few specifics about who it has significantly liaisoned with and when.

The letter cites HFPA president Hoehne, interim CEO Todd Boehly, Chief Diversity Officer Neil Phillips and other non-member and member directors. This week’s correspondence was preceded by the HFPA membership on July 28 giving a thumbs up to Eldridge Industries LLC’s proposal creating a new private and for profit entity to manage the Golden Globes, and a separate, non-profit entitypreserve its charitable and philanthropic programs.

Apparently, “a number of Tinseltown heavyweights” have requested a mass virtual meeting with HFPA leadership to seek clarification on the organization’s actual plans. But, so far, none of them have received a response. Then there’s the issue that, despite adding 20 new members in the past year, the majority of the membership remains in place. Translation: the same ol’ whites are still there:

Said one awards strategist to Deadline this afternoon: “The problem isn’t that the HFPA has a history of voting for a diverse line-up of nominees, the problem is that the org isn’t being transparent and that the former members are still there. There’s been no turnover.”

Deadline adds that HFPA bigwigs have been “on the charm offensive” the past several months, and are desperate to convince Hollywood that they’ve changed. When reached for comment, both HFPA and NBC remained mum. Back in 2018, the network signed an eight-year deal to air the Globes through 2026. It’s estimated that under this deal, NBC has been paying roughly $60 million a year to air the awards.

If the awards do end up getting green-lit for next January, I wonder who HFPA will hire to host. Might I suggest Ricky Gervais for the sixth time? I hear he’s got some really “taboo” material about trans people…
